Cape Town: "I want to call on Pick n Pay to spoil our learners with Easter eggs and a mascot for Easter." This was the request Pick n Pay got from the principal at Merrydale Primary School in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, and today this wish was granted.
The 1,100 young learners at the school were surprised with a delivery of Easter eggs by Pick n Pay asap! drivers – one of which was dressed as the Easter Bunny.
Pick n Pay has a longstanding relationship with the school as they are registered as part of Pick n Pay School Club – a network of 3,180 schools nationwide that receive free workbooks, posters, and materials every year. Various activations have also taken place at the school, including a donation of raincoats for all learners to help keep them warm and dry when walking to school during the winter months.
"A lot of our learners might never have had an Easter egg, it is a luxury some families can't afford," explains Mr. Dilgee, principal at Merrydale Primary School.
"When Pick n Pay School Club visited us in 2019 and donated hot cross buns and chocolate eggs for our Grade 1s as part of their Easter Drive, the joy the learners expressed was overwhelming. I wrote to Pick n Pay this year asking for a donation of chocolate eggs for all our learners as I wanted to give this experience to the whole school, especially after the past two years of strict lockdowns over the Easter period," he says.
Andre Nel, General Manager Sustainability at Pick n Pay, says creating memorable moments is a high priority for their School Club. "Happiness promotes learning, so while we provide supporting tools to best help learners and teachers thrive at school, we also understand the importance of boosting this with fun and enjoyable moments. This is a very good example of one of those."
For this particular handover – and to make sure they followed the principal's brief – Pick n Pay School Club partnered with Pick n Pay asap! – the retailer's on-demand delivery service – to have the ‘Easter Bunny' deliver the goodies for an extra memorable experience.
Planned as a surprise, learners shrieked with excitement seeing the Pick n Pay asap! Bunny and his fellow drivers enter through their school gate on their delivery bikes.
As part of the visit, the learners taught the Pick n Pay asap! bunny driver how to do the #HintHatchHop dance they'd been taught by the Pick n Pay School Club representative. The Pick n Pay asap! Bunny pulled out his best dance moves before selecting one lucky learner to win a special Easter hamper consisting of a limited-edition PnP Easter reusable bag – made from recycled plastic bottles – which was filled with more chocolate Easter treats and a R100 Pick n Pay voucher.
Nel says that it wasn't only the delivery Bunny driver and learners enjoying the dance. "It was so much fun, even a few of the educators got in on the dance action."
"Seeing the Easter Bunny arriving on a bike at our school to spoil us with a chocolate treat was the most amazing moment for the learners. And the chocolates will be yummy in their tummies," says Mr. Dilgee.
Vincent Viviers, Executive Co-Head of Omnichannel at Pick n Pay, says that the Pick n Pay asap! team jumped at the opportunity to join this initiative and spread more joy this Easter. "We've added gamification to our app in the build-up to Easter which gives customers a daily hint that they can unhatch for a great discount or a complete freebie. Being able to give some treats away in person – to such happy and deserving little faces – was truly special."
Helping to spread more joy, Pick n Pay School Club will be visiting 12 schools nationwide as part of its annual Pick n Pay School Club Easter Drive. This will see nearly 3,500 learners from Grade R to Grade 2 receive Easter eggs and hot cross buns ahead of the Easter weekend. A Pick n Pay asap! Bunny is also visiting a school in Johannesburg and Durban.
