Pick n Pay last year sold enough instant coffee to make 256 million cups of coffee – that is four cups of coffee for every South African!

Some of the other bargain deals customers took advantage of during Black Friday last year included toilet paper, long-life UHT milk and rice with enough to give a third of all South Africans a bowl (20 million servings).

Pick n Pay expects customers to shop similar great value groceries and household products. This includes cooking oil, carbonated cool drinks, biscuits and cooldrinks, washing powder and dishwashing liquid.

Black Friday is one of South Africa's most popular shopping events as shoppers look for great prices for everyday grocery items and those big appliances or gadgets they have had their eye on. After a tough year, consumers deserve some relief, and Pick n Pay will be making the Black Friday shopping season one to remember with huge savings.

Pick n Pay will offer customers up to 65% off this year, making this its biggest discount ever on Black Friday. This is Pick n Pay's single largest trading day, and last year the retailer recorded sales of R800m on the actual Black Friday alone.

Marcel Basson, Supply Chain Retail Executive at Pick n Pay, says that their supply chain team plays an incredible role in delivering this successful shopping event to customers.

He explains that the retailer began planning to move stock for Black Friday around three months ago. "We move more than three million additional cases of grocery stock to stores to cater for our Black Friday demand. This is a huge task to coordinate, but our teams do perfectly to ensure there is enough stock in stores for all the deals," says Basson.

While Black Friday has a global reputation for buying TVs at a steal, local customers often use it to get incredible value on items to restock their pantries.

Andrew Mills, Group Executive: Marketing at Pick n Pay, says, "Our Smart Shopper data gives us great insight into what excites customers, and we have planned well to make sure we have the right products at great prices. We now have two store brands, Pick n Pay and Pick n Pay QualiSave, so we can tailor our great value offers and savings to make them even more relevant for our customers."

Appliances and electronics remain incredibly popular Black Friday buys, says Enrico Ferigolli, Executive Co-Head of Omnichannel at Pick n Pay.

"We sold more air fryers last week than we sold during the whole year, both in-store and online.  Last week we launched our early Black Friday deals, which included incredible savings on air fryers because we know just how much our customers love them. We now see customers buying a second air fryer to make healthier on-the-go snacks."

Pick n Pay has increased its online reach for this Black Friday with its recently launched Pick n Pay Home (pnphome.co.za) online shop, which offers more home and kitchenware products and nationwide delivery. Some of the other most bought early Black Friday items on Pick n Pay Home included televisions, fridges and microwaves.

"Many customers turn to our online shop (pnp.co.za) to get their grocery Black Friday deals delivered to their door. Last year, visits to our website increased nearly four-fold on Black Friday," says Ferigolli.

Pick n Pay asap! was another popular Black Friday shopping platform, with on-demand orders increasing by over 200% on Black Friday last year when compared to the average shopping day. All Pick n Pay Black Friday deals will be available on the app this year for delivery within an hour.

He concludes, "Our IT infrastructure is fully configured to handle significant customer activity very efficiently over Black Friday so customers can be assured that our online systems will be more than sufficient to meet demand. We have also significantly increased our delivery slots over this busy trading period."
