Pick n Pay commits half a billion rand to cutting the price of essentials
[Cape Town, 22 March 2017] 50 years ago almost to the day, Raymond Ackerman bought three small stores in Cape Town. His one goal: to fight high prices and bring South Africans the best prices and best service of any retailer in South Africa.
Pick n Pay is marking its 50th anniversary by returning to its roots and getting cheaper for its customers. It has cut the everyday prices of over 1,300 essential items, has lowered fruit, vegetable and meat prices, and has over 1,000 items on special.
Paula Disberry, Group Commercial Executive of Pick n Pay said: "Our customers are under enormous pressure. The combination of low economic growth and job insecurity, combined with the impact on disposable incomes of high utility and transport costs, means that many South African consumers are having to cut back on all but the absolute essentials. Since foundation we've done what we can to help our customers provide for their families, and that is still our role today."
“We’re putting over half a billion rand into reducing prices of essential goods. Customers will see immediate savings on the grocery items they buy most, and in fresh fruit and vegetables, and meat. Savings from our butchery include all mince, selected pork products and bulk beef and lamb packs, and on fruit and vegetables products like potatoes, tomatoes, mushrooms, avos and bananas.
“Today’s technology gives us tremendous insights into our customers’ shopping habits, needs and preferences. And we looked at research from thousands of customers across the board, and talked to families throughout the country. Our customers are clear. In tough times what they want most of all is value and low prices, and especially on fresh.
“We’ve really listened to our customers and we’re going to help them out the way we know best – by delivering lower everyday prices on the things that really count.”
