Doing Good is Good Business

Pick n Pay and Boxer aim to create long-term value through responsible business practices that support customers, employees, communities, and the environment. Our founding principle of “doing good is good business” remains central to how the Group operates, even as Pick n Pay navigates its turnaround strategy.

Boxer’s vision is underpinned by its strategy “Growing Together, Greener Tomorrow”, with a focus on food security, climate action, and responsible consumption. Read more on Boxer’s contribution to sustainability on their Investor Relations website.

Pick n Pay and Boxer aim to create long term value through responsible business practices that support customers, employees, communities and the environment. Our founding principle of "doing good is good business" remains central to how the Group operates, even as Pick n Pay navigates its turnaround strategy.

The social and governance dimensions of our sustainability agenda have remained active throughout the turnaround. We have continued to invest in our people, support the communities we serve through food security and education initiatives, and maintain transparent stakeholder engagement.

Our environmental agenda has been deliberately reprioritised but not forgotten. Our ambition remains unchanged, and when the business returns to financial stability, we intend to pick up that agenda with full momentum.

Pick n Pay's ESG journey

Pick n Pay ESG framework

Our ESG framework guides our decision-making and aligns our actions with the key priorities of the long-term turnaround strategy. The framework takes into account the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) most relevant to our business and is designed to focus our efforts on those initiatives which will have the highest positive impact and provide the greatest opportunity to drive positive change. The framework allows us to embed sustainability into commercial decision-making and drives accountability through measurable outcomes.

Food is a basic human need. Transforming how food is produced and delivered requires strong partnerships across the food system. As a major retailer, we are driving access to affordable, healthy, safe, and responsibly sourced food, while building inclusive supply chains and reducing food waste.

As a retailer with thousands of suppliers and millions of customers, we are mindful of our wide reach and the environmental impact we have across our value chain. We are working on a broad set of solutions and targets to reduce our impact.

We have formally set Group-level science-based targets, approved by the SBTi in November 2025, committing to net zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by FY50. These targets apply across the Group, including both Pick n Pay and Boxer, with near term and long-term commitments to reduce our direct emissions and our footprint across the value chain. Minimising and honestly accounting for our climate impact remains the focus of our climate commitments.

Focus areas:

  • Reducing our carbon footprint
  • Conserving freshwater
  • Reducing and repurposing waste
  • Finding solutions to the packaging challenge

Pick n Pay remains in the midst of a multi-year turnaround, and capital allocation is currently prioritised toward restoring the core business. This means progress against our environmental targets will be incremental in the near term, particularly on capital-intensive initiatives such as full decarbonisation and waste infrastructure expansion. Our ambition has not changed, and we are committed to reporting transparently each year on where we stand, including where constraints have slowed us down.

Our CSI strategy is closely linked to our business strategy, with two key focus areas: food security and education.

Food insecurity has wide-ranging socio-economic impacts, including stunting, which affects educational outcomes, and broader social instability. Businesses operate within a complex environment, and social stability is part of what allows them to operate successfully.

Education is one of the most effective ways to lift people out of poverty. The Pick n Pay School Club supports schools with free curriculum-aligned educational material, helping build a pipeline of future employees and contributing to the communities we serve.

We believe doing good is good business. Customers reward businesses they see as being at the heart of society and giving back to the communities they serve. As customers reward us with their loyalty, we can grow, serve more customers, generate more jobs, and help build resilience in more communities.

Focus areas:

  • Targeting education and awareness
  • Targeting hunger
  • Targeting health and wellbeing

Through our ESD initiatives, we maintain a leading role in mentoring, encouraging, and enabling small-scale entrepreneurs to become sustainable suppliers to the retail industry. We hand-pick entrepreneurs with innovative product concepts or start-up enterprises to actively grow our diverse pool. Pick n Pay employees play a central role in guiding and nurturing these entrepreneurs through our app-based mentorship programme. Supporting strategic business objectives, we've improved the scope and quality of the ESD data we measure, including better monitoring of our training delivery and impact. Looking ahead, we will be supporting SMMEs to achieve their food safety system accreditation requirements. Our dedicated Pick Local brand endorses goods and services of small South African producers, suppliers and service providers who demonstrate a commitment to creating jobs, are B‑BBEE compliant, and ensure that their raw materials are locally produced, manufactured, assembled, or packaged.

Pick n Pay Clothing is increasingly investing in local manufacturers, and more than 40% of our clothing is now made in South Africa – up from 10% at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Unique to our proudly "Made in South Africa" range of quality wardrobe essentials is our collaboration with innovative local designers to curate limited-edition collections of on-trend pieces at accessible prices for everyone.
